Global Leaders Program 2011 a Success!
August 1, 2011
The 2011 YLI program held at The George Washington University in Washington, DC was a resounding success, with mixture of Australians, Romanians, Peruvians, Americans, and Canadians. Led by Co-Directors James Helmink (USA) and Alicia Rios (Peru), with program staff from Australia, Peru, and Romania, as well as YLIHQ staff, the weeklong program was filled with engaging speakers, outdoor activities, and challenges that the students were eager to solve. There were notable speakers such as Sherry Mueller, President of NCIV speaking about Global Citizenship, and Michael Trainer from Global Poverty Project inspiring students to help their world through local service projects. Activities included Team Business led by Andre van der Bergh, an engaging entreprenurial challenge in which participants learned the concepts behind running their own business; and Creating Peace by YLI's Charles Hall, a challenging conflict resolution program centered around events of 1983 in the Cold War, during which the participants successfully averted global war, and built pathways to global understanding and peace. During the week, students participated in a Challenge Course at GW, went canoeing on the Potomac, visited the sombering US Memorial Holocaust Museum, and planned and executed their own activities visiting museums and attractions in DC.
After a thouroughly enjoyable and exciting week, all the participants were sorry to leave, but looking forward to returning for the next YLI program next summer!
Youth Leaders International gives a huge thank you to all the volunteers and supporters around the world that made the week in Washington such a success, and we look forward to the next YLI program in the next year.
